Grüner Veltliner with Respect 2020 – Orange Wine by Fred Loimer

The Fred Loimer Grüner Veltliner mit Achtung 2020 is an Orange Wine from Austria. With its captivating aromas of cider, pear compote, walnut, a hint of yeast, wonderfully untamed, orange peel, apple peel wax, a touch of honey with herbs, and its golden straw yellow color, the Fred Loimer Grüner Veltliner mit Achtung captivates the senses. On the palate, this natural wine presents itself bone dry with a fine fruit melt, the complex nose is reflected on the palate. A fine natural wine with a substantial structure, a firm grip with perfect balance. A wine that can be decanted, as a little air does it good. It pairs well with spicy cheeses with pear mustard, roast chicken, or even Asian dishes. Aging potential: 2022 - 2032.

Fred Loimer – Winemaking

The grapes for the Grüner Veltliner mit Achtung from Weingut Loimer come from biodynamically cultivated vineyards according to respect-BIODYN in the Langenlois Hasel site in Kamptal at an altitude of 250-280m. The vines are between 15 and 45 years old. The interplay of climate and soil in the Danube region forms the basis for the character of the Loimer wines. Outcrops of the Pannonian, continental climate bring hot, dry days to the area. Cool air currents from the higher-lying Waldviertel mix and "spice" the up to 38°C hot air. The soils are equally unique and ideal for viticulture: on the one hand, maritime sediments are found here. On the other hand, there is loess, windblown dust from the ice age, which has compacted into fertile soil.

The Grüner Veltliner was harvested at the beginning of October 2020 – naturally by hand, selectively in small 20kg crates. Half was fermented with stems with subsequent maceration at 8°C for 5 days, the other half without stems as whole berries spontaneously fermented on the mash for eight days. Subsequently, the Grüner Veltliner mit Achtung was fermented in 300 and 1250 liter barrels. It aged for 8 months on the full lees, then after the first racking and blending without sulfuring, it was aged on the fine lees before being bottled in May 2022 without filtration, fining, or sulfuring.

The Grüner Veltliner mit Achtung is an Orange Wine, which it clearly demonstrates with its beautiful orange-yellow color, but which actually describes a winemaking process in which the berries of white grapes, as in red wine production, ferment on the mash, giving the berries time to release aromas and tannins into the must. This is probably the oldest form of winemaking in the world, originally from Georgia.
