Traminer Alte Reben mit Achtung – Orange Wine by Fred Loimer
The Fred Loimer Traminer Alte Reben mit Achtung 2016 is an Orange Wine from Austria. With its captivating aroma of orange zest, propolis and rosewater, kumquats and lychee, and its pale orange color, the Fred Loimer Traminer Alte Reben mit Achtung casts its spell. On the palate, the natural wine is bone dry with a delicate fruit melt, the complex nose is reflected on the palate and ends in an endless finish of rose jelly with candied orange. A fine natural wine with a substantial structure. A wine that can be decanted; a little air does it good. It pairs well with spicy cheeses with pear mustard or Asian dishes. Directly from the Fred Loimer winery, arrived with us in July 2023. Aging potential: 2018 - 2035.
Fred Loimer – Winemaking
The grapes for the Traminer Alte Reben mit Achtung from the Loimer winery come from biodynamically cultivated vineyards in Gumpoldskirchen at 300 meters above sea level, where they benefit from the Pannonian climate with hot summers and dry autumns. The up to 85-year-old vines grow on clayey sedimentary soils interspersed with calcareous gravel. The Traminer was harvested at the beginning of October 2016 – by hand, selectively in small 20kg crates. Spontaneously fermented for four weeks on the skins in acacia barrels. Subsequently, the Traminer Alte Reben mit Achtung was aged for 10 months on its full lees, then after the first racking with light sulfuring for another 8 months on its fine lees, before being bottled in May 2018 without filtration, fining, or further sulfuring.
The Traminer Alte Reben mit Achtung is an Orange Wine, which it clearly shows with its beautiful orange-yellow color, but which actually describes a winemaking process in which the berries of white grapes ferment on the mash, as in red wine production, so the berries have time to release aroma and tannins into the must. This is probably the oldest form of winemaking in the world, originally from Georgia.
