The Lava Falls linen napkins by Linen Tales are a pair of rust-red cloth napkins made from pure European linen, woven and stone-washed in Lithuania. The hem is mitered at all four corners, just like an envelope, keeping the fabric lying flat on the table.

Lava Falls Linen Napkins are a pair of cloth napkins by Linen Tales from Vilnius, each 40 by 40 centimeters in size, tied as a set of 2 with kitchen twine. When dining, they sit beside the plate, under the heavy red wine glass, or tucked loosely into the bread basket next to the gravy boat.

Rust-red that stands up to candlelight

Lava Falls is a dark, burnt red with enough brown undertones that it is far from being a signal color. The shade is reminiscent of old brick after a rain shower, and next to brushed oak, pewter, and white porcelain, it looks as though it has been there for years. By candlelight, the red dips a shade deeper, taking any severity out of the table setting without making the room dark. In December, a few branches are all you need for decoration.

The roast goose and what remains on your fingers

With a Christmas goose, dumplings, and red cabbage on Christmas Eve, both grease on the fingers and sauce at the corner of the mouth are inevitable. Paper disintegrates after the second touch, while this fabric absorbs the layer of fat and holds its shape. Red cabbage juice and roasting drippings disappear against the dark background, so no one at the table needs to spare their napkin. Mitered corners that keep the napkin lying flat

At each of the four corners, the hem is mitered just like an envelope, which is why this construction is also known as a mitered corner. This ensures that no fabric overlaps twice at the corner, creating no bulk, and the edge remains thin enough to lie flat. A napkin hemmed this way does not stand up beside the plate and maintains its shape over the years. Every single piece is cut and sewn by hand in the Linen Tales workshop in Vilnius.

Why linen leaves nothing on the wine glass

The linen fiber grows long and smooth, barely breaks, and therefore sheds no lint onto the rim of the glass or your lips. The fabric absorbs moisture quickly and releases it just as quickly into the air, so the napkin does not feel damp on your lap. With every wash, the fabric feels softer in the hand without losing its strength. That is exactly the difference compared to cotton, which becomes soft early on and then noticeably thins out.

Wash at 40 degrees, no bleach

Wash the linen napkins on a delicate cycle at a maximum of 40 degrees and use a mild detergent without bleach so that the rust red retains its depth. Bleach should only be used on white laundry and would cause this shade to look dull after a few washes. Spin at a maximum of 600 RPM and hang the laundry to air-dry; it will already fall smooth when placed on the table. If you fold them dry and stack them in the cupboard, you will find them ready for the next celebration without needing ironing.
