Wool, new wool, or lambswool – what is the difference?

Wool is a natural and renewable raw material. This blanket is made partly (one quarter) from new wool from the Gotland sheep—which was already shorn by the Vikings, who appreciated its high quality—and 3/4 from lambswool. Lambswool refers to the wool from the (very) first shearing of a sheep or lamb. It is particularly soft because the fibers are still very fine. Like new wool, it is obtained from living sheep, usually in the spring, and ideally in one piece. After shearing, the wool is combed and loosened before being beautifully dyed green and spun into yarn. The Klippan Gotland blankets are then woven from this wool. Lambswool is said to be hardly scratchy at all, breathable, and to have excellent insulating properties. It warms in winter and cools in summer. Klippan does everything to ensure the blanket feels soft, and for this reason, the lambswool is extra pre-combed; however, this quality is naturally scratchier than a cotton blanket would be, and the blanket may shed a little at the beginning.

The Gotland blanket can be easily washed at 30 degrees, so you can simply wash your throw yourself when needed. To ensure you enjoy your wool blanket for a long time, it is best to use a mild wool detergent and avoid fabric softener. Keep in mind that the natural wool grease has a self-cleaning effect and that you wash it out bit by bit with every wash. To let the self-cleaning effect of the wool grease work, hang the pear-green Gotland blanket outside on the clothesline.
