Wool, virgin wool, or lambswool – what is the difference?

Wool is a natural, renewable raw material. This blanket consists partly (one quarter) of virgin wool from the Gotland sheep—a breed already shorn by the Vikings, who valued its high wool quality—and three-quarters lambswool. Lambswool refers to the wool from a sheep's (very) first shearing. It is particularly soft because the fibers are still very fine. Like virgin wool, it is usually obtained from living sheep, ideally in one piece, during the spring. After shearing, the wool is combed and loosened before being dyed in wonderful pastel tones and spun into yarn. The Klippan Gotland blankets are then woven from this wool. Lambswool is considered to be barely itchy, breathable, and possesses excellent insulating properties. It provides warmth in winter and cooling in summer. Klippan does everything to ensure the blanket feels soft, extra pre-combing the lambswool for this purpose; however, this quality is naturally scratchier than a cotton blanket would be, and the blanket may shed a little, especially at the beginning.

The Gotland Stripe blanket can be wonderfully washed at 30 degrees, so you can easily wash your cozy blanket yourself whenever needed. To ensure you enjoy your wool blanket for a long time, it is best to use a mild wool detergent and avoid fabric softener. Keep in mind that natural wool grease has a self-cleaning effect, which is gradually washed away with each wash. The blue-and-white striped Gotland Stripe gets the fresh air that thick wool needs when hung out on a clothesline.
